This one, against a Wyoming team that had not lost in 13 home games this season, was headed that way as well. An 11-point lead dwindled to a single point in the closing minutes, only for the Aztecs to get a pair of clutch baskets from an unexpected source. Up a point with a minute to go, Pulliam drove right and muscled up a layup over three taller bodies. After Wyoming post Graham Ike couldn’t score over Nathan Mensah at the other end, Pulliam drove left, spun and hit a fallaway 12-footer for a five-point lead with 15.9 seconds left.
That was important because the Aztecs cooled off after a torrid first half that included, yes, 10 of 14 shooting behind the 3-point arc. Bradley and Pulliam were the only players in double figures as both teams shot under 42 percent overall. Then Drake Jeffries made a 3 off a double team of Maldonado. Then he made another. Then Noah Reynolds made one. Then Brendan Wetzel did for a 21-16 lead.
Johnson’s trey gave the Aztecs a 44-34 lead, only for Jeffries to trim it seven with a 3 of his own at the halftime buzzer.
