Often when I saw up close the grown men who were playing football against San Diego State for either BYU or Utah, a thought arose. What could the football Aztecs accomplish with as many grown men as the Utah schools fielded? The two extra years of maturity from returned church missionaries — physical, mental, emotional, sports IQ — seemed a large windfall for Utah, even more so when it got big money by joining the Pac-12 and now the Big 12.
In the team’s final-16 match that year, Connecticut goaded two of those younger Aztecs — Kawhi Leonard and Jamaal Franklin — into technical fouls, contributing to the Huskies' third-round victory en route to the NCAA title. LeDee and Aztecs coaches have pulled off one of the college game's great developmental stories. They’ve shown what talented, ultra-driven folks can do with an extra year or two of time and competition together.
