Azerbaijan i President Ilham Aliyev accused Russia of accidentally downing the plane while engaging Ukrainian attack drones. He claimed that the plane experienced electronic jamming and was then shot at while approaching Grozny. Aliyev criticized Russia for initially blaming the crash on a bird strike or a gas cylinder explosion, alleging attempts to cover up the incident.

He called for Russia to accept responsibility and punish those responsible. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Aliyev spoke on the phone on Sunday, and the Kremlin stated that both civilian and military specialists were being questioned about the incident. The head of Russia's Investigative Committee assured Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General that the investigation was being handled by the most experienced experts
