Pakistan secured a thrilling three-wicket victory over South Africa in the first ODI, thanks to centuries from Saim Ayub and Salman Agha.

Saim Ayub and Salman Agha carried Pakistan to a narrow three-wicket victory over South Africa in the first one-day international ( ODI ) in Paarl on Tuesday. After setting Pakistan a target of 240 runs to win, the Proteas were aggressive from the start of the touring team’s chase. Marco Jansen removed Pakistan 's opener Abdullah Shafique for a duck in the second over.

Saim and Babar Azam then put together a 44-run stand for the second wicket but a mini-collapse saw Pakistan tottering at 60/4 in the 20th over. Saim and Salman rescued the innings with a 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket, Saim reaching his second career ODI century with 109 runs off 119 balls. After Saim was dismissed, Salman guided Pakistan to victory with 82 not out. Earlier, South Africa set a target of 240 after winning the toss and choosing to bat. Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton combined in a 70-run stand for the first wicket but the Proteas lost momentum after both openers were dismissed. Aiden Markram and David Klaasen then stabilised the innings
