Chancellor Jeremy Hunt hinted at plans to allow town halls to raise bills by 5 per cent to fund social care and other services amid surging inflation
Council tax could surge above £2,000 a year for average bill payers for the first time after Thursday’s Autumn Statement.is considering allowing town halls to increase bills by up to 5 per cent without getting the permission of residents in an effort to ease pressure on social care and other stretched local services as surging inflation eats into budgets.
Raising this to 5 per cent as Mr Hunt is considering, would mean around 3.8m households in Band D – taken as the standard measure of council tax – face paying up to £100 extra, taking their annual bills above £2,000 for the first time.
