Jeremy Hunt to unveil spending cuts and tax rises in Autumn Statement
The BBC has spoken to people in Whitehall and Parliament about what is likely to be in Mr Hunt's Autumn Statement.
The government argues the measures are needed to fill a so-called fiscal black hole - the gap between what the government raises and spends. The threshold when the highest earners start paying the top rate of tax will be lowered to £125,000 from £150,000. Universal support payments will end but there will be targeted support for those on low incomes and pensioners.
