Leather interiors are criticized for being unethical and unsustainable; here's how leather firms like Bridge of Weir and car companies hope to change the script.

Although leather became synonymous with luxury automobile interiors in the modern era, it didn't start out that way. Tough, durable, water-resistant leather is what the chauffeurs driving vast open-cockpit town cars in the 1920s and 1930s sat on while their employers lounged behind them on silk and wool in their warm and dry enclosed compartments.

Packing a 697 hp and 664 lb-ft punch, an AMG Speedshift MCT wet-clutch nine-speed automatic transmission, and stiffer suspension, the DBX707 is a wonderful long-distance mile-muncher, even off the motorways. Although Aston Martin pitches it as the hot-rod of its SUV line, at the end of what would be a 1,300-mile road trip, the DBX707 seemed more like the most accommodating and versatile GT car the company has ever built. It returned a best of 21.7 mpg, a worst of 16.2 mpg , and an average of 18.0 mpg for the trip, reasonable for a vehicle of its power, size, and weight. Still, when you're paying the equivalent of up to $7.90 a gallon for premium unleaded, your wallet thinks otherwise.

So far, so eco. But in addition to the leather-makers that, unlike Bridge of Weir, kill animals specifically for their hides, the industry's big problem is the use of metals, most notably chromium, in the tanning process. The chromium compound commonly used for leather tanning is chromium hydroxide sulfate, known in the industry as chrome 3.
