More than a dozen major Canadian employers will take part in an annual autism job fair on Monday in Richmond.
“We want to shift the assumptions associated with people living with ASD and change the idea that they can’t contribute to the workforce,” said Xavier Pinto, whose Toronto-based charitable foundation Substance Cares organizes the annual job fair. Autism spectrum disorder encompasses a range of developmental disorders that include challenges with social interaction, repetitive behaviours, as well as speech and non-verbal communication.
Job skills workshops, resume and employment consulting, on-site job interviews and community service providers will be available at the fair.According to 2012 statistics provided by Autism Speaks Canada, some 83 per cent of Canadian adults with autism report no employment income. Adults with ASD also have the lowest employment rates in Canada at 14.3 per cent; the employment rate for the general population is 92.7 per cent.
