Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Australia's intention to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly, intensifying international pressure on Israel following similar moves by France, Britain, and Canada. The decision is contingent on commitments from the Palestinian Authority, including Hamas's exclusion from any future state.

Australia n Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday that Australia will recognize a Palestinian state at next month’s United Nations General Assembly ( UNGA ), aligning with international pressure on Israel following similar declarations from France, Britain, and Canada. This decision comes after Albanese led a cabinet meeting and addressed reporters in Canberra.

He stated that Australia’s recognition would be contingent on commitments received from the Palestinian Authority, ensuring Hamas would have no role in any future Palestinian state. Albanese emphasized that a two-state solution is essential to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and bring an end to the conflict, suffering, and starvation in Gaza. He further stated that a political, not military, solution is necessary. This announcement follows Australia’s previous criticism of Israel’s plan to exert military control over Gaza last week. Albanese asserted that the decision to recognize a Palestinian state was further propelled by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s disregard for the international community’s calls and his failure to adhere to legal and ethical obligations in Gaza. Albanese, alongside Foreign Minister Penny Wong, released a joint statement criticizing Netanyahu’s government for accelerating the expansion of illegal settlements, threatening annexation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and overtly opposing any Palestinian state. However, Albanese saw an opportunity in the Palestinian Authority’s commitments to governance reform, demilitarization, and general elections, along with the Arab League’s demands for Hamas to relinquish its rule in Gaza. Meanwhile, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced that New Zealand would carefully evaluate its position on recognizing a Palestinian state within the next month.
