Australia strips commanders of medals over Afghanistan war crimes
A 2007 photo of Australian soldiers in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Tirin Kot, Afghanistan . An enquiry found soldiers had executed prisoners in initiation rituals, among other crimes over more than a decade.
Fewer than ten commanders will be stripped of their awards, but their names will not be released for privacy reasons. The report made 143 recommendations -- including a medal review -- and suggested 19 individuals be referred to Australian Federal Police.
