AUSTRALIA: The government in Australia’s Northern Territory has lowered the age of criminal responsibility, and children as young as 10 years old can now be jailed, according to a BBC report.

The new Country Liberal Party government, which came into power in August, said that the new age limit was necessary to combat crime among youth.

NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said that the change would allow courts to put young offenders through programmes that will help address the root cause of their crimes. Most of these crimes are related to burglaries and assaults. The NT government also made stricter rules on bail and has introduced penalties for “posting and boasting” about crime on social media.

“We know – because all of the evidence tells us this – that the earlier a child comes into contact with the criminal justice system, the more prolonged their involvement is likely to be.
