Australia’s squad approach to fast bowling in the Ashes is expected to continue in the third Test, with James Pattinson considered likely re-join the XI.
The expectation was that Pattinson would resume his place in the pace trio after making a long-awaited return to Test cricket three weeks ago at Edgbaston, most likely at the expense of Victorian teammate Peter Siddle, who has played in the first two matches of the series.
Pattinson was effectively rested at Lord’s for his own long-term wellbeing as part of a deal with Langer that he would play the second of back-to-back Test matches at Headingley.“We’re looking at maybe a bowling change at this stage but we’ll get through training today and make a decision on what we think is the best combination to win this game," Paine said on match eve.
“He’s pretty good,” Paine said. “No complaints from him so far. I think the last 12 to 18 months his body has really matured and can handle a really big workload.“Not only do you see a high level of skill from Pat all the time but he’s highly competitive as well. He’s a great weapon for us and someone that we certainly need to look after. But at this stage he’s handling the workload really well. He’s a super professional in the way he prepares himself , the way he looks after his body.
