Austin radio station KUT announced today that their long-time host, John Aielli, has died after two years of fighting complications from a stroke he suffered in 2020. He was 76.

Aielli began his work in radio when he lived in Killeen, eventually earning a piano scholarship to UT. He arrived at UT in 1966, and was hired by KUT at just 20 years old.

Through his experience, he began hosting a morning show in 1970 titled "Eklektikos" at KUT that became wildly popular for its array of music types and frequent guests that he interviewed. The show lasted more than 50 years. Though he was a radio host, he also had musical ambitions. Having had a jazz singer for a mother and a pianist for a father, Aielli trained as a vocalist and gave annual recitals throughout the 70s. Austinites grew to love his Holiday Sing-Along at the Texas Capitol.

Aielli, through his impact on Austin radio, will always be remembered by listeners and the people who knew him.
