Australia have narrowly missed out on their first medal of the Olympics after a heartbreaking final dive in the women’s 3m synchronised diving event. Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney looked on track for a medal, but only scored 48.60 points on their fifth and final dive. Unfortunately, Smith slipped slightly off the edge of the board, which cost them any chance of a big score and a certain medal. Smith was immediately in tears after leaving the pool.
I’m not entirely sure what happened there,” commentator Sam Fricker said on Nine. “They’ve just missed out on a medal.” “It’s the heartbreak, isn’t it, of the Olympic Games,” Mark Taylor added. “You feel for Anabelle Smith. Matt Hill going over to console her ... 10 points off the bronze medal there.” China’s pair of Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen won gold with 337.
