After his first week on the job, Aurora’s interim police chief Dan Oates’ plans include stabilizing the police department, creating goodwill within the community and helping cops feel good about their work.
One of Oates’ first tasks will be to implement the consent decree enacted after an attorney general investigation found a pattern of racially-biased and routine excessive use of force incidents. He said he plans to follow that roadmap to bringing back respectability for the department in the eyes of the public.
Do you think pushing out former chief Wilson signals a lack of commitment to reform or a concession to the unions that have been unhappy with her firing ? I think we’ve gotten away from the use of specialized units to be directed at specific crimes and some sort of street-level enforcement directed at violent crime. Now there’s a lot of crime in all of America and in the Denver Metro region, and in Aurora, way too much. There’s a host of reasons why that is the case right now in America. Part of it is COVID. But regardless of those issues, we can’t sit on our hands, we have to do what we can do.
So that might be a strategy that we go towards here and I understand there’s some interest on the part of the council in that regard too. That may be low-hanging fruit, I’m not sure. I need to spend a good month here talking to people in the organization and outside about crime strategy and I think good ideas will emerge.
