Ald. Ron Woerman, at large, said the recognition of that day in 1990 is one thing, but for him it started longer ago, in the mid-19th century, when his great-great-grandparents immigrated to the United States and settled in the Midwest. Those people settled on the near East Side in what was called Dutch Town, an Americanization of “Deutch Town.” Not only did they start businesses like the Wurst Kitchen, but they built the original St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, which is now on the far West Side.
As is the custom of the flag-raisings in One Aurora Plaza for different ethnic groups in the city, the city recognized several German-Americans for their contributions to the city.Winners of the Resilience and Excellence Award were Chris Goerlich-Weber, Ed Sieben and Dee Hakula.
