AU Hopes Ethiopia, Tigray Peace Talks Will Lead to Ceasefire Ethiopia Gabon Ghana Kenya
AU-led peace talks
- that took place in South Africa from October 25, 2022 between the representatives of the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan authorities - would lead to a ceasefire and open a way to bring humanitarian support to those who are in need. The talks were facilitated by Olusegun Obasanjo, the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa, along with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President of South Africa Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.which had been widely expected to end on Sunday October 30, 2022 - will continue into Monday, October 31, 2022 sources said.
The Tigray conflict has raged since November 2020, when long-standing tensions between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front came to a head with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launching a military operation he described as a"law and order operation". He accused the TPLF of targeting government military units and holding illegal elections in Tigray.
