ICYMI: Attendance for first three days of Calgary Stampede higher than start of last pre-pandemic edition yyc
Stampede Park saw 164,520 visitors on Sunday’s Suncor Family Day alone, which was about 8,200 more visitors than on the same day during the 2019 Calgary Stampede. Overall, this year’s Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth has drawn 18,000 more people than after the first three days in 2019.
While Sunday saw high attendance, it didn’t quite beat the single-day attendance record for a Stampede Sunday. The highest single-day attendance recorded on a Sunday was during the Stampede Centennial in 2012, when about 184,000 people flocked to the event.Article content Large crowds have added long wait times for rides and food at the Calgary Stampede in Calgary on Monday, July 11, 2022.Stampede patrons definitely noticed the larger crowds, especially when compared to the scaled-down 2021 Stampede. Several people at the Stampede on Monday said the crowds seemed as big, if not bigger than they did during the last full-blown Stampede in 2019.
Two women who work in a restaurant in the grandstand said they’re noticing a lot more tourists coming through this year compared to last, both from within Canada and internationally. “It feels like we’re trying to bring people out and show Calgary off because we haven’t been able to forever.”Carson Ackroyd, the senior vice-president of sales with Tourism Calgary, said Monday the Stampede crowds have a significant impact on getting businesses back on their feet after a challenging couple of years.
