Organised by the Aggrey Klaaste Trust in partnership with Sowetan, the SA National Editors’ Forum, the University of the Witwatersrand, Alex FM and DM5 in a bid to bridge the gap between journalists and ordinary citizens, the event will be held at the Pan Africa Mall from 3pm under the themeAlexandra is one of the areas that were hard hit during the July riots and Alex FM, which operates from the centre, was also targeted by looters.
The community radio station lost valuable equipment estimated to be worth about R5m during the July chaos. As the riots faded away, Alex FM was also hit by a loss of life when one of its presenters was robbed and killed by criminals in the area. AKT executive director Jerome Klaaste said Alexandra was chosen to host this year’s main gathering to give locals an opportunity to get their voices heard in the media, but more importantly to engage communities about the importance of the media.
“The ever-increasing attacks on journalists all across the nation is a clear indication that a lot of work needs to be done in educating the people of our nation on the important role played by the media in our society,” said Klaaste.Would you like to comment on this article?
