The African Transformation Movement has called on the South Africa n government to prepare for an influx of refugees fleeing the turmoil in Mozambique , reports Mozambique ’s Constitutional Council on Monday confirmed the electoral outcome from the October elections and validated Frelimo as the winner and Daniel Chapo as president.
‘The aftermath of the elections has seen tragic consequences for the Mozambican populace, with reports of at least 130 fatalities, over 2000 injuries, and thousands arrested, including minors,’ says ATM’s spokesperson, Zama Ntshona. ‘The historical implications of unrest in Mozambique are stark; the last civil conflict had dire repercussions for South Africa, resulting in an influx of over 350 000 refugees and a strain on resources.’
‘We urge the establishment of temporary stations along the South African-Mozambican border, ready to assist Mozambicans seeking refuge from the violence.’ ‘To enhance border security and assist in monitoring activities along the border, the ATM advocates for the utilisation of newly purchased drone cameras.’
