Although astronomer Edwin Hubble never received a Nobel Prize for his monumental confirmation that what had been known as the Andromeda nebula was actually a galaxy, his name is attached to this famous space telescope, along with an asteroid and a crater on the moon. Photo courtesy of NASA Image and Video LibraryIn 1750, English astronomer and mathematician Thomas Wright theorized that the stars were not randomly scattered throughout the universe.

While observing many of the Milky Way nebulae, he discovered that many of them were, in fact, clusters of stars. In February 1845, William Parsons, a wealthy amateur astronomer, constructed what was then the largest telescope in the world — a 37.5-metre tube with a 1.8-metre objective mirror, a massive contraption that he manipulated with a series of cables, straps, pulleys and cranes.

Because astronomers could not present conclusive evidence as to exactly how far away the nebulae were, this debate continued for another three years, until 1923 and Edwin Hubble.ATLANTIC SKIES: Bright stars mark the immense celestial path of the dimmed Milky Way in winterOn Oct. 6, 1923, Edwin Hubble , a young astronomer who had previously studied astronomy at the Yerkes Observatory near Chicago, Ill., made a remarkable discovery which changed the whole course of astronomy.

The inverse-square law, first developed by 14th century English philosopher John Dumbleton and later refined by Isaac Newton, establishes the relationship between a star's luminosity, apparent brightness and distance. Simply put, the law states that the radiation from a light source illuminates an area that increases as the square of the distance from the light source: i.e.

At the time of Hubble discoveries, the Nobel Prize in Physics did not recognize research done in the field of astronomy. Hubble spent the latter part of his life trying to convince the Nobel Prize Committee to recognize astronomy as an area of physics instead of its own science, which, unfortunately, the committee did only after Hubble's death in 1953.
