The annual holiday meal hosted by the downtown San Diego Rescue Mission shows both the spirit of the season and the lives of some of the city's vulnerable.
Just before 1 p.m. Saturday the line waiting to get into the annual holiday dinner at The San Diego Rescue Mission went halfway down Second Avenue, hugged the corner at Elm Street and stretched down the length of the block to First Avenue.
The free meal at the Rescue Mission has been a fixture of the holiday season since it first began in 2001. It is an event that captures the spirit of selflessness and giving at the core of the Christmas celebration. Food is not the only service on offer. Diners were also able to get medical attention from a team of volunteer healthcare workers. The mission also provided a safe storage area for unsheltered people reluctant to leave their possessions unguarded, and a small area where pets could be left and watched over.
As they left diners were given a bag jammed with essential items like personal hygiene products, water bottles and a pocket-size edition of the Christian Bible’s New Testament. She acknowledged that might be difficult, but it did not affect her gratitude for the meal. “If it weren’t for the Rescue Mission,” she said, “some of us would not have any pace to go.”
