The commission’s general manager on electoral matters, Granville Abrahams, said 96.9% of results were already in the system awaiting scanning and auditing.
“This means of the 64,502 results expected, 62,500 have been captured into the results system. Of the 62,161 results captured, 53,209 have been scanned into an image and thus are available,” he said.
As at 4.25pm, the IEC's results dashboard showed the ANC leading with 46.19% support across the country, followed by the DA with 21.80% and the EFF with 10.30%. Some political parties, including the DA and ActionSA, have come out to declare and celebrate their victories in different parts of the country. The commission has condemned the “lawlessness” of this as it was yet to release final, audited results. “It is a practice that we saw in 2019 and it is unfortunate that we're seeing it again. I do not know whether we are going to continue being those kinds of people who would prefer to be lawless and so on.
