BALTIMORE — On the outfield concourse at Camden Yards, beyond the left-center fence, Brooks Robinson, cast in bronze, wears a slight smile, glove adorning his left hand, his body poised to charge a slow roller to third to make another Gold Glove play. And when fans at the ballpark learned Tuesday of Robinson’s death at the, the statue drew them in to pay respects before the Orioles played the Washington Nationals.Tears were wiped from faces. Selfies were snapped.
Almost immediately after the Orioles announced his death, reactions came from around the sport. MLB Network broke into a special segment on Robinson, his highlights playing on every TV in the Camden Yards press box.“All of us at Major League Baseball are saddened by the loss of Brooks Robinson, one of the greats of our National Pastime and a legend of the Baltimore Orioles,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement."Brooks stood among the greatest defensive players who have ever lived.
