The World Series shifts to Philadelphia as the Phillies host the Houston Astros. Here are the best bets for tonight's Game 3.

The Astros opened as fairly substantial favorites, which isn’t a big surprise considering they entered the series having not lost a single game before blowing Game 1 at Minute Maid Park. As of Sunday night, Houston -130 is the longest available moneyline odds with it reaching as short as -150.

The Phillies have seen their moneyline odds go as long as +120 for Monday’s game with Syndergaard set to start. While Thor’s reputation as a frontline starter — or a pitcher with that potential — he hasn’t been that guy for some time. That’s not to say he hasn’t been effective with Philadelphia, but he’s been closer to middling than good.Article content

Syndergaard has pitched a total of 5 1-3 innings in three appearances during the postseason. One of those was a start vs. Atlanta where he only allowed one run on one hit but he was also limited to three innings and 35 pitched before Philadelphia turned to its bullpen. This highlights one of the most specific advantages the Astros have in this series: the pitching staff.

Once the Phillies have burned through top starters Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler, things start to get a little dicey, especially if they’re unwilling to trust Syndergaard to go deep. So, Philly would then have to rely on a bullpen that posted a 4.27 ERA in the regular season to go toe-to-toe against the Astros. By comparison, Houston’s bullpen had the best ERA in baseball at 2.80.Article content

Unless Syndergaard is truly unhittable, which is unlikely based on how he performed after being acquired from the Angels at midseason, then the advantage easily lies with Houston. Thor is also no longer missing bats at the elite level he demonstrated before Tommy John surgery. He struck out just 95 batters in 134 2-3 innings. Against a lineup that makes a boatload of solid contact, this is a recipe for disaster.
