LOS ANGELES — The Astros signed Jon Singleton to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Sugar Land on Saturday, reuniting with a first baseman who was once a heralded prospect in their system.for the first time since 2015. He was waived after playing in games with Milwaukee and elected free agency after going unclaimed.

Houston originally acquired Singleton in a 2011 trade and signed him to a five-year deal in 2014 before his first major-league game. He appeared in just 114 games for the Astros from 2014-15, compiling a .171/.290/.331 slash line with 14 home runs. He was released by Houston in 2018 while serving a 100-game suspension for a third positive test for a drug of abuse under the minor league drug program.

Singleton played in the Mexican League in 2021 and signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers late that year. He slashed .219/.375/.434 with 24 home runs in 134 games at Triple-A Nashville last season and had a .384 on-base percentage at Triple-A this year before the Brewers called him up. Singleton offers first base depth for an Astros team that has received little production there amid José Abreu’s first-half struggles. Abreu sat out back-to-back games for the first time this season Wednesday and Friday with Mauricio Dubón playing first base in his first professional action at the position.
