is expected to be out three to four months after suffering a right lat strain during his last minor-league start, the team announced Friday.
Whitley, once one of the sport’s top overall prospects after he was drafted by the Astros in 2016, has been beset by setbacks and injuries over the last few years, including a 50-game suspension in 2018 for violating MLB’s drug prevention and treatment program andThe Astros also announced a slew of other minor league injury updates on Friday, including two concerning a pair of their top-ranked prospects.
Outfielder Drew Gilbert, currently tabbed as the organization’s No. 1 prospect by MLB.com, has left elbow discomfort and as a result has been limited to designated hitter duties in his last few games for Class AA Corpus Christi. Gilbert last played in the outfield on May 23 and, according to the Astros, is working with medical staff to get back there.
Infielder Will Wagner, who is also at Corpus Christi, had surgery to remove the right hook of hamate in his right hand and is out six to eight weeks. Wagner is ranked the Astros’ No. 12 prospect by MLB.com and was slashing .270/.353/.432 in 20 games played at Class AA this season. Righthanded pitcher Jayden Murray is headed to the minor-league injured list with right forearm tightness and will miss his scheduled Sunday start for Class AAA Sugar Land. He has an 8.27 ERA through 41 1/3 innings pitched across 11 games this season.
