Astros insider: Stirring comeback vs. Cubs leads to 'win of the year'
Astros manager Dusty Baker said starting pitcher J.P. France’s three home runs given up Wednesday night were on “cutters that didn’t cut” in France’s home debut. There’s a reason why the Astros are the reigning World Series champs, however, and although France’s cutter was not cutting, the Astros were still champing to get in their cuts at the plate despite a five-run deficit late to the Chicago Cubs in the series finale.
Baker dubbed the final game of the series, capped by Kyle Tucker’s walkoff two-run single, the “win of the year” among 24 candidates, and he won’t get argument from his 26 players. “Being down five runs and coming back to complete a sweep heading into an off day is nice — we can enjoy it,” Tucker said.
Baker turned to Seth Martinez to stem the early flow of Cubs runs, and he pitched 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless ball. Ryne Stanek, Rafael Montero, Hector Neris and Bryan Abreu each followed with a shutout inning to keep the contest within reach.
