WASHINGTON — The Astros are on the precipice of a club record. Their path there is peculiar, perhaps a precursor for the four months that follow in this interminable season. Offense has buoyed the Astros for so much of their recent renaissance. Most anticipated it would again this season.
Houston placed two runners in scoring position after its five-run first inning. Yordan Alvarez homered and Yuli Gurriel singled for the only hits in that span. The 7-for-33 showing lowered the Astros’ team batting average to .223. Twenty-three lineups have a higher one. Sustaining a 0.91 ERA is impossible. Five of the 11 games during this streak were against Detroit and Washington, two lineups with a worse OPS than the Astros. Teams with a pulse will provide a more stiff challenge, but the Astros can only play the clubs in front of them. Houston is doing what contenders do to pretenders — pummeling them while their lineup remains in flux.
