Major League Baseball has suspended Houston reliever Bryan Abreu for throwing intentionally at Adolis García in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series on Friday. ...

Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and Texas Rangers infielder Ezequiel Duran hold back Rangers right fielder Adolis Garcia during a benches clearing altercation during the eighth inning in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Friday, Oct. 20, in Arlington.Advertisement

García, Houston manager Dusty Baker and Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., who led the rush of Houston players on to the field in the eighth-inning, bench-clearing incident were all fined, MLB’s Senior Vice President for On Field Operations Michael Hill announced Saturday. MLB, citing all six members of the umpiring crew’s opinion, deemed Abreu’s intent with the pitch and the potential impact for injury caused by the 98.9 mph fastball that hit García in the arm in the eighth inning.

“It was just the heat of the moment,” García said after the game. “I just reacted to being hit by the pitch. I just reacted towards him as soon as I felt the hit. It was just a thing that happened in that instant.”Abreu has the right to appeal the suspension, which would be held in abeyance until a hearing could be held.

“We felt the first pitch Abreu threw, 99 miles an hour, hit by the shoulder area,” umpiring crew chief James Hoye told a pool reporter after the game Friday. “There was a little situation between García and Maldonado. The benches emptied on the field. So after we cleared everybody, all the players, we separated the players, we had a conference among the six of us, and we decided that the pitch that Abreu threw was intentional on García, so he was ejected for that.
