Years ago, NASA developed special lights to adjust ISS astronauts' sleeping patterns. A startup is bringing that technology back to Earth.
As you may already know, sleeping in space isn’t easy. Due to lack of gravity, ISS inhabitants can’t lay down in beds but sleep in bags that are strapped to the walls of small sleeping quarters. But even if they get used to floating as they sleep, many of them suffer from insomnia because, as they orbit the Earth, they see the sunset and the sunrise every 90 minutes.
When the ISS was first inhabited, it mainly used fluorescent lighting fixtures that provided continuous, cool-white light. But as the crew’s sleep patterns worsened, it became imperative to incorporatethat provided some ability to control the color temperature and intensity of light, more closely emulating the natural light changes that take place on Earth.
“I felt I could help more people by creating a smart wellness solution. I don’t say smart lighting, because ‘light’ refers to what we see, but these receptors that we target for wellness and circadian rhythms are non-visual,” says Soler.
