The find is extremely rare for the country, and it is the first time a relic of such grand size has been found in the area in nearly a century.
A massive 2,000-year-old complex containing a trove of ancient Roman artifacts was uncovered beneath a Switzerland gravel quarry — the first find of its kind in almost a century.
“Only a few structural relics of this kind from the Roman period are known in the pre-Alpine region – in contrast to other regions. What is also astounding is the relatively good preservation of the remains,” Christa Ebnöther, Professor of Archeology of the Roman Provinces at the University of Bern,Though the complex has yet to be completely uncovered, archeologists estimate that its walls extend over an area of at least 5,300 square feet and contain multiple rooms.
Roman tableware — or so-called terra sigillata — and manufactured glass vessels, as well as gold fragments likely once belonging to a piece of jewelry have already been lifted from the ruins for preservation.
