A specific offence of assaulting an emergency worker - including police - was brought in in April 2017 - with those guilty facing up to two years behind bars.
Ministers also brought in 'Harper's Law' giving mandatory life sentences to the killers of emergency workers last year, after PC Andrew Harper was killed in the line of duty in 2019.“Assaults on members of our emergency services are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. This is why the government has doubled the maximum penalty for assaulting an emergency worker so those convicted face up to two years’ imprisonment.
“It is misleading to draw a link between the assaults statistics and the number of people leaving policing, or to say that there has been a 70% increase in assaults on emergency workers.”
