Assaulted learner's parents want government to take action
The parents of a Grade 8 learner, who was hit by a brick and collapsed at school in Ga-Dikgale in Limpopo, want the Department of Education to take action against the perpetrator.
The parents say their child was injured when he was hit by another learner at Ramabu High School. The learner was treated at the Mankweng hospital.“I am hurt as a parent. I asked for a report from the school. I haven’t received anything. The school promised that they will involve police and social workers, but nothing was done. The whole family is in pain,” he says.
“The way our child was bleeding after he was hit, it’s hurting us. Doctor confirmed there is no damage to the skull, but we don’t know how this will impact our child in future. We don’t know if his ear will go deaf or not,” he adds. Chief Education Specialist for School Safety in the Department of Education, Alex Mashiane says although there are incidents of violence, schools remain safe.
“Limpopo Department of Education is aware of trends of in school violence that are making rounds in our province. However, we remain a department that cares and supports its own children and it’s own teachers. Very common manifestation of this violence comes in the form of fighting. Many children fight over small items like pens, furniture, chair and other things.
