18 new charges stem from 2010 classified leak from Chelsea Manning.
Thursday on federal charges for violating the Espionage Act—among other new charges—by publishing classified information leaked to him by Chelsea Manning. The charges appear to challenge the limits of what can be protected under the First Amendment.
The 18-count indictment covers activity from 2010, when Assange published classified documents leaked to him by then-Army analyst Chelsea Manning. Prosecutors say Assange conspired with Manning to hack into the military’s computer network.The additional charges come as Assange awaits extradition to the U.S. after being forced out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London last month.
