Lewis is the second of five leadership candidates to criticize the party for staging a third debate in the race that ends Sept. 10.
OTTAWA—Conservative party members would rather hear leadership candidates talk about the World Economic Forum and COVID-19 vaccines than federal budgets and carbon taxes, says Leslyn Lewis.
The World Economic Forum is an international organization that hosts an annual summit of world leaders and business elite in Switzerland. It is also a frequent subject of unfounded conspiracy theories about its influence over global affairs — an issue Lewis’s parliamentary colleague, Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner, has flagged as potentially dangerousLewis’s campaign did not respond Wednesday to a question from the Star about the World Economic Forum programs cited in her letter.
“I cannot in good conscience fritter away an opportunity to meet thousands of Canadians who are desperate for answers so I could attend an impromptu meeting with leadership candidates to discuss questions to which the answers have already been memorialized in previous debate videos that exist online,” Lewis wrote.
Baran said decisions about the event format would be finalized over the next 24 hours, and that the party is confident it will be “a good debate that allows Canadians to evaluate the candidates’ positions.”
