An investigation into the death of a Grande Prairie man at the local RCMP detachment will now be handled by the province’s independent police watchdog — not Mounties themselves — after criticism from the man’s family
Addison Hartzler, 30, died June 3 after being found unresponsive in a cell nine hours after his arrest for mischief.
Officials with both ASIRT and the RCMP confirmed the change in agency Thursday, saying the file was handed to ASIRT Aug. 9 and that the family wasn’t informed prior to the news release.Article contentAddison Hartzler was one of two men to die in Grande Prairie RCMP custody in the span of a year-and-a-half. Family said he was arrested after calling 911 about a break-in at his home. Police told them no evidence of a break-in was found, and that Addison was arrested for making a false report.
Gregory Hartzler said the province’s director of law enforcement, who decides how to handle serious police misconduct cases, initially said the investigation would remain with RCMP because there was no “confrontation” between RCMP and Addison prior to his death, and because of the number of files recently assigned to ASIRT.
