Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte threatens martial law-style enforcement of a monthlong lockdown in the main northern region of the country as violations of the quarantine soared.

In this April 8, 2020, handout photo provided today by the Malacanang Presidential Photographers Division, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte wears a protective mask as he speaks on the new coronavirus situation of the country during a late night live broadcast from Malacanang, Manila, Philippines. The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people, but for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.

“The police and military will enforce social distancing and curfews. They will. It’s like martial law. You choose. I don’t like it,” Duterte said but added that he may be forced to “if the country gets compromised and you won’t show discipline.” The Philippines has reported 5,660 infections, the most in Southeast Asia, including 362 deaths from COVID-19.— CHINA’S ECONOMY TUMBLES: China suffered its worst economic contraction since at least the 1970s, and weak consumer spending and factory activity suggest it faces a longer, harder recovery than expected. The world’s second-largest economy shrank 6.8% last quarter after factories, shops and travel were closed to contain the infection.
