Ash battled Gary without ever using Pikachu.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One of Ash's biggest battles in all of Pokémon was his dramatic battle against Gary Oak in the Johto Region's Silver Conference, and yet oddly enough, it's also one of the only battles where Ash didn't have Pikachu on his team.
Ash and Gary, of course, had a long-running rivalry dating back to the first episode, with Gary always one step ahead, a fact which infuriated Ash. Ash and Gary had only had one small one-vs.-one battle before this, where Ash's Pikachu lost to Gary's Eevee. After collecting the badges of the Johto region and entering the Silver Conference, it soon became apparent that the two would have to battle each other in a full, six-vs.-six battle.
Ash Wanted to Prove His Own Strength, Not Pikachu's Despite Pikachu's loss to Gary's Eevee much earlier on, Pikachu had proven itself an essential member of Ash's team, winning him the Orange Islands League as well as being a key member in most of his gym battles. Ash's Pikachu's exceptional power was firmly established by this point, so it seems strange that Ash would leave Pikachu to watch from the sidelines.
By this point in the series, Ash had come to rely on Pikachu's power quite a bit, perhaps overly so. While that never stopped Ash from using Pikachu before, his rivalry with Gary is something that dates back to childhood, long before Pikachu entered the picture. Ash's victory in the Orange League had won him some respect from Gary, but now was the time for Ash to prove to Gary he was a talented Trainer.
Ash's battle with Gary is a big moment for his character, so there's clearly some significance to not using Pikachu here. His victory redefines their relationship, allowing them to finally bury the hatchet and become friends. Pikachu was still there at his side, of course, cheering on his other Pokémon and supporting Ash through setbacks, but Ash proved he didn't need Pikachu on the field in order to beat Gary.
