The Food Standards Agency said packs of St Pierre 6 Pains Au Chocolat are being pulled from the shelves

A popular sweet treat is being urgently recalled by retailers including Asda, Sainsbury's and Ocado over fungus fears.

Customers have been advised to make sure they do not eat the potentially dangerous item which is on sale in stores for £2. The Food Standards Agency said packs of St Pierre 6 Pains Au Chocolat are being pulled from the shelves due to the 'possible presence of mould'. Experts say those at an increased risk of falling ill from mouldy food include elderly people, children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. Products with September 17, September 25 and October 1 are deemed 'unsafe to eat'.The watchdog has urged people to also check the use-by dates of any St Pierre chocolate croissants, including any in their freezer.

The FSA said: "St Pierre is recalling 6 Pains Au Chocolat because of the possible presence of mould. The possible presence of mould may make the product unsafe to eat. "If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to your nearest store for a full refund. You do not need your receipt.
