Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has slammed the decision to omit a certain midfielder from the Black Stars squad that is set to take on Nigeria in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs. 😯 Here's what he had to say! ➡
On Monday morning, interim manager Otto Addo's 27-man squad to face the Super Eagles on 25 and 29 March was finally announced. However, his selection has since been criticised by the country's all-time top goalscorer Gyan.
Addo named six midfielders for his squad, namely Thomas Partey, Kudus Mohammed, Daniel Kofi Kyereh, Elisha Owusu, Edmund Addo and Idrissu Baba, leaving no room for Anderlecht star Majeed Ashimeru."This guy Majeed Ashimeru is the best midfielder in Ghana after Thomas Partey, PERIOD," he wrote on Twitter. Here are all 10 African countries that have qualified for the play-offs.
Ashimeru has been a regular feature for the Belgian outfit in the Jupiler Pro League this season, making 31 appearances so far, but has only two caps for the national team since making his debut in 2017. The 24-year-old was previously on the books of Austrian giants RB Salzburg, before turning his loan spell at Anderlecht into a permanent move in July 2021.
Ghana will host the Super Eagles at the Babayara Stadium in the first leg on Friday, before the sides make the trip to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium four days later in Nigeria.
