Trump's racist taunt that four congresswomen of color 'go back' to the 'places from which they came' unified Democrats just as they were facing one of their most serious fractures since taking control of the House.

President Trump's racist taunt that four congresswomen of color"go back" to the"places from which they came" unified Democrats just as they were facing one of their most serious fractures since taking control of the House.

Trump did not directly name the four lawmakers, but House Democrats widely interpreted it as a slam against Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , Ayanna Pressley , Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib . The four, all women of color, had dubbed themselves “the squad,” and have advocated for more progressive policies.

“It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me,” Trump said when asked if he was concerned that many saw the tweets as racist and that white nationalists had found common cause with him on the comments.“I’m saying they’re socialists, definitely, as to whether or not they are communist, I think they might be,” Trump said.

“The offensive comments made this morning about my colleagues are totally unacceptable and wrong,” tweeted Rep. Josh Gottheimer , a leader of the Problem Solvers Caucus, which has squared off against progressives. “There is no place for it .”“When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to ‘Make America Great Again’ has always been about making America white again,” she tweeted.

Sen. Susan Collins , one of the most moderate Republicans, followed up, saying that the president’s tweet was “way over the line, and he should take that down.”
