As the world sees a black hole for the first time, Claire Denis's High Life couldn't be more topical via nparts
“Art-house science-fiction” is not a common genre. Where such hybrids exist, they usually serve as inspiration for later, more accessible remakes. Chris Marker’s 1962 La Jetée became 1995’s Twelve Monkeys, while the 1973 film World on a Wire was remade in 1999 as The Thirteenth Floor, and also helped inspire that year’s The Matrix.
And there’s a serendipitous real-world connection. Released in Canada barely a week after scientists produced the first image taken of a black hole, High Life imagines a ship bound for just such a stellar object – and gets the look of it pretty close as well. Where is everyone else? Denis presents a fractured timeline that will eventually reveal more details, including the unsettling fact that Monte and the other astronauts are not starry-eyed volunteers but felons looking for an alternative to prison. Though as the story progresses it becomes clear they may have chosen poorly.
Denis grounds her fiction in science without getting overwhelmed by the details. Relativistic time dilation means centuries have passed on Earth while Pattinson’s daughter grows into a teenager, played by Jessie Ross. She’s reflective but quirky, as might be imagined of someone raised by a single parent – and no one else.
