OCI Solar Power's Rico Zuniga, left, senior site operator and Timothy Heinle, vice president of business development, tour the company's Alamo 1 Solar Farm Sept. 23, 2020 on the city's south side.Solar farms and wind turbines in Texas generated a record high 36 percent of the state’s electricity through the first half of this year — more than twice the amount renewable resources were producing just five years ago.

Half of the solar-wind equation is a no-brainer at this time of year, said Joshua Rhodes, an energy researcher with the Webber Energy Group at the University of Texas-Austin. “It feels a little bit frustrating because there was also a lot of thermal that was offline,” Rhodes said, referring to some natural gas, coal or nuclear power plants that were unexpectedly out of service last week when power demand crested. That included one plant operated by CPS Energy, which an official said was idled by an unplanned outage.

In San Antonio, 23 percent of the power city-owned CPS Energy generated from February through April came from gas-fired power plants. The utility hasn’t shared more recent generation data. “The outlook is not good considering August power prices and demand are typically higher than July,” he said. The cost of electricity “would be quite a bit higher if we just had natural gas, or if we just had coal,” he said.As CPS Energy’s legal war with gas suppliers winds down, San Antonio customers’ rates are going up
