“I think we’re fed this idea that we just wake up one day, and we suddenly love ourselves.”
I was privileged enough to have been able to go to treatment. I also had NA and AA and I was like, ‘Wow I'm so lucky to have these spaces. I’m so lucky to have that hour out of the day where I can come in, and share in a confidential and safe space, and look around the room and see other women and men nodding and acknowledging, because they understand what I'm going through.’ There's no judgement there, no stigma.
I was given a counsellor because they were worried about me at school. But I spoke to someone who was like, three times my age, and he was like, ‘It will get better, you'll be fine.’ But things can start off so small, you know, someone calling you a name, someone pointing out one of your insecurities, but those build over time. And if you don't have those spaces to really talk about it, I think they really bubble up.
