There have been at least 160 emergency department closures across Ontario since 2022, something that had only happened once since 2006.
While some rural hospitals have managed to keep their emergency departments open, short-term solutions are expensive and unsustainable, said Robert Alldred-Hughes, president and CEO of Glengarry Memorial Hospital in Alexandria. More sustainable solutions will take longer.
Carleton Place is the fastest-growing community in the country, and the temporary closure of its emergency department can have a major ripple effect on nearby communities as locals seek out the next-closest option. He blames the provincial government’s “mishandling of the nursing file,” including Bill 124, which capped salaries and benefits at one per cent during the pandemic and which the government continues to fight in court. Not only is recruiting nurses more difficult under these circumstances, he said, but retaining them is as well.Article content
