While Kawhi Leonard has stopped picking at the scabs of an old wound, another former Spur has not, columnist Mike Finger writes.
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JANUARY 16: Dejounte Murray #5 of the Atlanta Hawks reacts after drawing a foul on a three-point basket against the Miami Heat during the fourth quarter at State Farm Arena on January 16, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia. The bitterness keeps fading, just as we suspected it would.
But while Leonard has stopped picking at the scabs of an old wound, another former Spur has not. And even though the circumstances of Dejounte Murray’s San Antonio departure were much, much different, the question at the center of this new supposed controversy is a familiar one.
When he played for the Spurs, he used to credit them openly and often for molding him into one of the best two-way guards in the NBA. Now, in retrospect, he said he believes they did not lift him as much as they tried to “see if they break .” After Jackson played a key role on the 2003 NBA championship team, San Antonio let him leave via free agency. After reacquiring him 10 years later, the Spurs released him near the end of the regular season.
His list of complaints, as far as these things go, did not seem particularly egregious. The summer the Spurs drafted him in 2016, selecting the teenager after teams passed on him 28 times, they also added a backup point guard from Argentina named Nicolás Laprovíttola. Murray, though, now chooses to focus more on how Parker declined to mentor him “the way he should have,” and he certainly has a right to feel that way.
