As 'moderate' Conservatives meet, suspicions of anti-Poilievre plotting grow via nationalpost
Centre Ice Conservatives, a group founded by Alberta businessman and former federal party leadership candidate Rick Peterson, says it wants to bring Conservatives on the centre or centre-right of the political spectrum together to push their political agenda to different party leadership candidates.
Cardy, Kheiriddin and LeBreton will all be speaking as panellists during the group’s first conference on August 11. They will be joined by Alberta MP Michelle Rempel Garner who stepped down from her role as national co-chair for Patrick Brown’s campaign, before he was disqualified from the leadership race amid allegations of wrongdoing.Article content
“As much as the political parties are sliding off to the extremes, polls continually show the large majority of Canadians are in the centre, which isn’t surprising, and they’re being deprived of any realistic option at this point,” he added.Article contentLeBreton said that the sole purpose of the conference is to generate debate on “really important issues to the country,” such as the economy and the environment, and that the timing of the leadership race was not a factor in the planning.
“I think he is speaking on issues that people feel that, in many ways, sometimes it’s taboo to talk about,” he said. “When he took the position he did about the Bank of Canada governor, it was criticized in mainstream media, but it’s certainly popular with a lot of Canadians.” Paradis also said that all Conservatives will have to familiarize themselves with the “new makeup of the party” now composed of 675,000 members, many of which have been recruited by candidates in recent months.
