A dispute over a wall near Lake Huron is just one example of a conflict that's roiled shoreline communities on the Great Lakes for years, over who gets to decide how beachfront property is protected against the shifting sands.
Ryan Finch's cottage, pictured here, sits atop a bluff that, during high water on Lake Huron, is slowly being swallowed by water. He built the wall to keep his deck from falling into the water. Since the stop work order was issued, the $150,000 wall has begun to collapse.
Now, the three will appear in court again, on Jan. 26, for a sentencing hearing during which the court could impose a fine and possibly order the wall dismantled at the owner's expense — an estimated $50,000. What I did was to protect my property and to keep the beach clear, and they're twisting what I did and trying to make it sound like something it wasn't."What I did was to protect my property and to keep the beach clear, and they're twisting what I did and trying to make it sound like something it wasn't," said Ryan Finch, president of Finch Auto Group and the owner of two of the cottages.
Finch wanted to clear the rocks and build a new wall to guard against the rising lake, threatening to swallow his deck and part of the bluffs upon which his personal cottage sits."It was made clear to us we were not going to get a permit.
The partially completed stone wall built to protect three properties owned by the Finch family is shown here in an undated image. The structure has since become the high-profile flash point of the kind of conflict that's roiled Great Lakes communities for years. "We apply our regulation consistently across our watershed," said Cade. "We're not looking at who the people are or anything like that. It's — if you've offended the Conservation Authorities Act and we can't find common ground to fix things, we follow what the conservation act allows us to do."
