The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has failed to act on several recommended safety improvements as fatalities in truck crashes continue to rise.
“It’s a critical time to have an adminstrator in this position considering the skyrocketing number of fatalities and the desperate need to advance some rulemakings that have been lagging for years,” said Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, an alliance of consumer, health, law enforcement and insurance industry groups.
“Having the nomination sends a message that the administration is prioritizing the need to address the safety shortcomings.”During Carlson’s tenure as acting administrator, the safety agency began developing a requirement to install emergency braking systems in heavy trucks and saw an increase in funding.
